Kyoto Museum of Crafts and Design

A showcase of Kyoto’s traditional craftsmanship

The Kyoto Museum of Crafts and Design offers a unique insight into the cultural heritage of Kyoto through its extensive display of traditional crafts and design. Art enthusiasts and history buffs can explore exhibits and demonstrations that showcase the craft of ceramics, textiles, lacquerware, metalwork, and woodworking.

Located in the Okazaki district’s Miyako Messe building, the museum is an important venue for Kyoto’s historical narrative and artistic mastery.

The Kyoto Museum of Crafts and Design is a multifunctional facility, encompassing permanent exhibitions, such as the Kyoto Traditional Industry Museum, and serving educational purposes with regular shows, workshops, and handicraft classes.

The collection highlights the city’s tradition in crafts, featuring Nishijin-ori woven textiles and Kiyomizu-yaki ceramics among others. Educational activities include Surigata-Yuzen stencil-dyeing technique classes and the chance to witness traditional Maiko dance and the expertise of seasoned artisans.

After Miyako Messe underwent renovation, it reopened in 2020 with updated features including a materials library and workshop spaces. Significant events including cultural festivals, book sales, and even archery tournaments take place here, showcasing its role as a versatile venue.

Adjacent to Miyako Messe, the Okazaki Museum District invites visitors to explore other cultural sites, with the Heian Jingu Shrine in proximity. The museum shop offers locally handmade crafts, and the cafe (currently closed for refurbishment) provides refreshment with a view of Kyoto’s scenery.
