Tenryu-ji Temple, a Zen Buddhist sanctuary, is located in the picturesque district of Arashiyama in Kyoto. Founded in 1339 by Ashikaga Takauji and dedicated to Emperor Go-Daigo, this World Heritage Site is known for its architectural beauty and natural scenery. Its Sogenchi Garden, designed by Muso Soseki, is a Special Place of Scenic Beauty that masterfully integrates the surrounding Arashiyama mountains.

About Tenryu-ji Temple

As the head temple of the Tenryu-ji branch of the Rinzai sect, Tenryu-ji is a significant site in Kyoto. It has historical connections to the Ashikaga shogunate and the imperial family, with the tombs of Emperors Go-Saga and Kameyama on its grounds. Despite being destroyed by fires and conflicts like the Onin War, the temple has been rebuilt, with key structures from the Meiji Period.

The temple’s artefacts include portraits of Muso Soseki, paintings of Avalokitesvara, and a wooden carving of Gautama Buddha. These pieces provide insight into Buddhist art and religious practices.

The Hojo Garden offers views of Mt. Arashiyama and Mt. Kameyama, creating a contemplative environment true to Zen principles. The nearby famous Arashiyama Bamboo Grove and the lush Hyakka-en Garden behind the Main Hall offer additional experiences within the temple’s vicinity.

Tenryu-ji is a place of historical depth and spiritual importance, remaining a sought-after destination by those wishing to experience its tranquil gardens and rich history.
