The Sagano Scenic Railway, known as the Sagano Romantic Train, offers a journey through Kyoto’s natural splendor. This railway provides a 25-minute ride with views of the Hozu River and lush bamboo groves. It is a favored attraction during the cherry blossom and autumn foliage seasons.

The Sagano Scenic Line, originally part of the Kyoto Railway, opened in 1899. In 1991, the revitalized line began operating as a tourism-specific railway. As a single-track, non-electrified line, it features traditional carriages, including open-air cars for panoramic views.

The railway runs alongside the Hozu River, allowing passengers to enjoy seasonal views taking in the surrounding mountains and forests. The train’s colors reflect Kyoto’s heritage, and the line includes special performances and events, especially during the autumn foliage season.

The Sagano Scenic Railway has become a significant cultural and historical landmark in Kyoto. The route, recommended for nature and railway enthusiasts, starts at Torokko Saga Station and ends at Torokko Kameoka Station. The stations feature attractions such as preserved steam locomotives and dioramas of Kyoto’s historic sites.
